05-20-10  SGR  |  Philadelphia Wooden Boat Factory.  $4,999 to help fund the Summer in Service Project which will provide summer employment to 26 neighborhood youth in the Boat Factory.

TGR  |  Al Bustan Seeds of Culture
Children Can Shape the Future worked with Al Bustan in 2008, funding a Swift Grant Request to bring noted Palestinian-American poet, novelist, and teacher Naomi Shihab Nye to Philadelphia to conduct a reading workshop with students at six Philadelphia public schools.  CCSF is again proud to be a part of Al Bustan's work by approving a TGR in the amount of $7,500 to fund summer camp scholarships.  CCSF's funds will support ten full scholarships to Al Bustan's three-week language and arts camp centered around Arab cultural and historical themes.  The board of directors was particularly impressed by the program's ability to bring together a diverse group of students from different ethnic backgrounds, social classes, and geographic areas. 
 
TGR  |  The Cambodian Association
Children Can Shape the Future worked with the Cambodian Association twice in the past three years.  In 2007, CCSF awarded the Cambodian Association a TGR for $25,000 to help maintain and expand its youth and family enrichment programs.  In 2008, it was awarded $4,999 to expand its summer camp program.  Now, in 2010, CCSF is proud to once again award the Cambodian Association with $25,000 to continue its awe-inspiring work with high-risk, low-income Cambodian students, ages 5-11.  The board of directors at CCSF continues to be impressed with the core programming offered at the Cambodian Association as well as the degree to which they have addressed sustainability and growth.  CCSF has seen the Cambodian Association grow responsibly over the past three years through the hard work and dedication of its staff while maintaining and expanding its educational offerings. 
 
TGR  |  Camden County Historical Society
A TGR in the amount of $12,041 has been awarded to the Camden County Historical Society to partner with thirty Camden high school students and former RCA employees for an in-depth oral history project entitled, "Voices from the Golden Age of RCA."  The board of directors enthusiastically supported this request because of its connection to the local Camden community and its efforts to connect high school students to the history of their neighborhoods.  CCSF was also impressed by the potential to replicate the program through the creation of an interactive website where both students and educators could review and share the results of the work. 
 
TGR  |  Northwest Interfaith Hospitality Network. 
In 2008, Children Can Shape the Future awarded the Northwest Interfaith Hospitality Network a TGR in the amount of $25,000 to support the fledgling Children's Discretionary Fund.  Following in the footsteps of that work, CCSF is proud to continue its support of the NIHN by awarding an additional $15,000 to fund its SPARKS initiative.  The youth component of their holistic initiative Planning for Success, the SPARKS program will support children and teens by making participation in extracurricular activities affordable and accessible to their families.  An integral part of the program is a Youth Engagement Counselor who will help both children and parents select appropriate activities, locate local community resources, and identify entry-level summer work positions.  The board of directors at CCSF was impressed by the scope of the SPARKS program and how it seeks to education the whole child.  Additionally, CCSF has been impressed with NIHN's responsible growth and approach to sustainability.
 
TGR  |  Weavers Way
Children Can Shape the Future is proud to partner with Weavers Way through a TGR in the amount of $25,000 to support its school-based cooperative food business.  The Marketplace Program is modeled on project-based learning techniques, and the program is run by students with support and guidance from teacher advisors and Weavers Way Community Programs staff.  Each school runs a mini co-op/small business, requiring small-group collaboration, democratic decision-making, and a variety of academic skills, while also emphasizing healthy food education.  Additionally, the program addresses both sustainability and philanthropic ideals by allocating a third of each school's profit to covering project expenses and two thirds to supporting local and international charities of the school's choosing.  The board of directors was inspired by this innovative model, which simultaneously taught business/math skills, food awareness/nutrition, and community building/philanthropy.
