Grant History: 2008 TGR Details

The Board of Directors is proud to announce the 2008 TGR grant recipients! This year's
applicant pool was not only the largest on record, but also the most impressive!  We are continually amazed and excited by the caliber of our applicants, and we believe that this year's grants are some of our best ever. From over $1,000,000 worth of requests, the board has approved $169,464 for distribution.
 
 
The Alice Paul Institute-$10,000
The Alice Paul Institute (API) is a non-profit based in Mount Laurel, NJ. API educates
the public about the life and works of Alice Stokes Paul, suffragist, author of the Equal
Rights Amendment, and lifelong activist for women's equality. CCSF's funding supports
the Girlblazers Summer Camp which introduces adolescent girls to women leaders and
to the leadership skills that they need to develop in order to become leaders
themselves. CCSF is proud to help fund the camp because of the powerful message
API's work instills in girls from the Camden area.

Awbury Arboretum Association-$25,000
The Awbury Arboretum Association utilizes the resources of the arboretum to improve
the well-being of children living in the Northwest section of Philadelphia, with a focus on
addressing childhood obesity through outdoor education. CCSF's funding supports the
Summer Nature Program, Awbury School Outreach, Out-Of-School Programs, and the
start up and operation of the Family Farm Garden. CCSF was tremendously impressed
with the dedication of the staff and the depth and breadth of the work the Association
undertakes in the local community.

Fresh Artists-$25,000
Fresh Artists is a non-profit organization that supplies art supplies to art teachers in
Philadelphia's most under-resourced public schools. CCSF's funding helps support
Fresh Artists in its first full year of operation. CCSF was thrilled by Fresh Artists'
innovative model of civic engagement and impressed with its ability to enhance the lives
of all involved.

Northwest Interfaith Hospitality Network-$25,000
The Northwest Interfaith Hospitality Network provides temporary shelter and services to
homeless families in a child-centered environment. CCSF's funding supports its
fledgling Children's Discretionary Fund, which was established to provide basic,
recurring, educational-based needs to the Network's child population. CCSF was
particularly taken by the emphasis NPIHN placed on “keeping families together” and
was delighted to be able to provide support to NPIHN's child population.

NetworkArts-$10,000
NetworkArts is a non-profit that supports the enhancement of education programs in
schools through the creation of permanent, public murals. CCSF's funding helps bring
NetworkArts innovative teaching model to as many as ten new classrooms in the
2008-2009 school year. CCSF was proud to support such a fresh approach to arts/
humanities education and was impressed by NetworkArts outstanding track-record.

The Rock School for Dance Education (RockReach Residency Program)-$7,500
The Rock School's RockReach Residency Program provides elementary school
children in Philadelphia with high-quality, consistent dance instruction at their schools as
part of the school day. CCSF's funding helps bring dance education to approximately
125 school children by supporting faculty residencies at two public schools in
Philadelphia. CCSF was impressed with RockReach's ability to provide a high-caliber
program at a relatively low cost.

Breakthrough of Greater Philadelphia-$25,000
Breakthrough is an academic enrichment program that builds a path from middle school
to college for low-income students from Philadelphia's public schools. CCSF's funding
supports a pilot program entitled Breakthrough Leaders Academy, allowing for, among
other things, an extra two hours per day of program activity dedicated to leadership
training. CCSF was excited by Breakthough's winning combination of enabling students
to educate their peers while helping them to navigate the path from middle school to
college.

WYCK Association-$7,964
WYCK, a historic house and museum in Germantown, recently began offering outdoor
education programs that serve local, head-start preschool classes. CCSF's funding
helps support this fledgling program by supplementing the basic costs associated with
running the program. CCSF was moved by the grassroots nature of the program and
by its impact on local schools and the communities they serve.

Philadelphia Young Playwrights-$24,000
Philadelphia Young Playwrights is an arts education program that taps the potential of
youth and inspires learning through playwriting. CCSF's funding brings their awardwinning Classic Program to four Philadelphia classrooms. CCSF was excited by the quality of the Young Playwrights' program and was amazed by its long history of
affecting change in Philadelphia.
