Opportunities Industrialization Centers, Inc.
First Person Documentary Project
The Cambodian Association of Greater Philadelphia
Project Learn School
All four applicants demonstrate CCSF's focus on innovative, progressive community education. Please click on each applicant to learn more about the tremendous work each does in the Philadelphia and Camden areas.
Opportunities Industrialization Centers, Inc.
OIC received a grant from CCSF in the amount of $24,500 to help expand their current programs offered to out-of-school youth in the Philadelphia area. The requested funding will be used to provide laptop computers to their diverse student body so that they may continue their education even when homebound. Additionally, the funding will be used to provide extra-curricular activities, fieldtrips, and a school library.
The board of directors was impressed by OIC's focus on out-of-school youth. With more than 8,000 students dropping out of Philadelphia high schools every year, the board agreed that the need to address this crisis could not be more urgent.
First Person Documentary Project
First Person received a grant from CCSF in the amount of $25,000 to help support the completion of the feature-length First Person documentary film.
The board of directors was awed by the film's deeply personal examination of college access in low income, urban Philadelphia neighborhoods. The board was confident that the film would serve as educational tool for students, current/future teachers, and just about anyone lucky enough to see it. Furthermore, the educational outreach model employed by First Person was of great interest to the board. The interactive website and the community-based teams of youth promoting college readiness was a combination of education, art, and sociology that CCSF simply could not resist.
The Cambodian Association of Greater Philadelphia
The Cambodian Association received a grant from CCSF in the amount of $25,000 to help maintain and expand their Youth and Family Enrichment Program. The requested funds will be used to support both their after-school program and their summer camp enrichment program.
The board of directors was inspired by the depth and breadth of the work that the Cambodian Association does in their community. The outreach programs and services they provide at little or no cost to the local Cambodian population were deemed invaluable by the board. Their programs are natural intervention sources in the lives of children in need, and that is exactly the kind of work that CCSF is enthusiastic to support.
Project Learn School
Project Learn received a grant from CCSF in the amount of $24,850 to expand their First Saturday Outreach Program. The requested funds will be used to hire new staff, purchase new equipment, and generally support the development of the program.
The board of directors was honored to be able to support such a shining example of school-based community education. The free cooking, dance, and theater classes are an amazingly rich educational opportunity not generally offered in traditional education settings. CCSF is pleased to support a program that we hope will become a focal point for creative learning in the Germantown/ Mt. Airy neighborhoods.
